These cause difficulties with Shepherd’s ability to stand and walk without support, manage transfers, and perform activities of daily living. Shepherd is highly motivated to keep up with his older siblings and to continue to improve his learning and motor skills. He currently sleeps in a first-floor bedroom and would benefit from adaptations to help him get in and out of his bed more independently. He uses the first-floor powder room as his bath, but it lacks a shower for full bathing on the first floor. His parents need to carry him up fifteen stairs to the second floor for bathing and to be included in playtime in his parents’ or siblings’ bedrooms. Shepherd would benefit greatly from renovations to the first-floor bath to add a shower and roll-under sink, and a stairlift for mobility to the second floor. Shepherd’s independent access to the backyard is limited by stairs and a back deck with multiple levels. His parents currently carry him into the house from the van in the driveway and then carry in his wheelchair separately. This will not be possible with a power wheelchair due to its weight. A wheelchair lift in the garage would allow Shepherd to enter his home independently and safely. His parents are also interested in exploring ideas for possibly converting the garage into a recreation area and rebuilding a portion of the back deck for better access to the outdoor dining and play areas.
